Philosophy and Everyday Life

Have the courage to use your own reason!

This was the motto of enlightenment, but don’t you think we need this motto today than ever before?

Today, we are shackled by all kinds of communication devices and tools. These tools and devices, which now almost everyone possesses, captivate our attention so much that we find no time for independent thinking. We remain stick to these devices all the time.

These communication devices are undermining our capacity for thinking which is uniquely a human quality. It is our capacity for thinking that differentiates us from all the other beings. If we lost this capacity, we will loose not only our identity but also our nature as a human being. Because we are essentially thinking beings.

Therefore, the biggest challenge for humanity today is to preserve this unique trait amid the technological enslavement.

But how can we safe our nature from being destroyed?

I suggest that we include a little philosophical activity in our everyday life. An activity which is devoted to thinking.

We can take any topic of our choice and start thinking about it. We can ponder over the meanings or consequences of anything we come across. We can also reason about why something is the case, why people believe this or that, and so on. The purpose of this exercise is to stimulate thinking.

I know it will be very difficult for many people. But the only way to keep our capacity for thinking intact would be to keep it in use. So I believe by adding this activity in our life we can preserve our capacity for thinking and in turn save our nature from being destroyed.

What other ways there are which can stimulate our thinking? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
